What makes us who we are?

Having had too much time to think recently, I have been wondering "what makes us who we are?" I look back on my past and wonder how much of who I am is because of what happen to me in childhood? How much is genetics? How much was choices I have made? Can someone who experienced extreme trauma become all they would have become if they had no trauma? Does trauma make you stronger? In all I am glad I can still see good in others. So maybe in the end, it does all work out. We do have a say in who we become. Events, DNA, and choices are all in the mix. We can only control our choices.

I am laughing because I am wondering if maybe you and I are connected in someway in our minds..... LOL Read my posts and you will see why I say that. I personally think we are stronger because of the trauma. We had no choice in that matter. Experiences form a person in thinking, and life. I hate that we have dealt with so much trauma, but in a way because se have had to deal we are now more compassionate people I think.

Welcome back Wanda. BTW I love the pic.

Ohhhh if you read the last four posts that is I think. I did paint also while you were gone. The painting holds a lot of special meaning to me, because I was thinking of my sisters and I as I painted. The poem explains. I read the poem over the phone to one sister and she cried. She then asked me if she could have a copy. She also asked me to comfirm that the painting was about us. She got it. Amazing that some actually really understand my painting and writing..

Welcome home miss wanda you were missed bunches!!!!!!

I think in the end we are better people for, not what we experienced, but how we cope afterwards and how we treasure the things in life most take for granted... but that is just my opinion...

We just started a class this semester that may help us answer some of those questions. The class is "Self and Society"...we are going to explore just how much of who we are is a creation of our invironment as opposed to our minds. In all honesty, I think that overall we are stronger because of the trauma, with some weaknesses thrown in to confuse us! Welcome back!

I think its a combination of everything you mentioned Wanda. Most of it though, being our choice. There is so much in life we can not control, but we can, for the most part, (excluding those with certain disorders) control our own behaviors, choices, and reactions. As easy as that sounds, we are also human, which is a huge weakness. We cant always fallow the "logical path" for some reason. So, ...lol my answer to "what makes us who we are" is, we are who we want to be. Each day we make choices to be who we are and choose how we see the world that day. Who we are is never perminent. (in my opinion)
